PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE ARE CORRECTIONS SENT IN BY READERS AND HAVE NOT BEEN VERIFIED BY THE AUTHOR From Anthony Hendon: Walk 2 - Baou de St-Jeannet We found instruction 8 in this walk rather cryptic - "Go to the front of the ruin and opposite the tall dwelling part of the building take a path down to the right marked wth yellow splashes". Perhaps the ruin is even more dilapadated now than wehn you were there, but it was impossible for us to know which side of it was the front. As the path is not very visible unless you know where it is, our debate about which side of the ruin was the front resulted in some people setting off down the rockface in the wrong direction! It would be better for this instruction to read: "Go to the east side of the ruin. The path is through the trees opposite it." Instruction 6 says "The defined path goes along the right side of another stone wall." We were most certainly on the left side of the wall. And we were definitely going in the right direction! Walk 3 - Le Chemin du Paradis. We went wrong straight away on this walk because we could frind no evidence of the start point given - the La Jarrerie restaurant. Perhaps it has closed down. A more permanent landmark would be preferable! Walk 10 - Pic du Cap Roux Twice on page 90 the reader is instructed to take the N28 road to the walk. I believe the road in question is actually the N29. Our only quibble with this walk we will most definitely forgive you for. The text of the walk does not point out that the walk up to the Grotto of St-Honorat is a diversion rather than a necessary part of the walk. But I'm glad every one of us made the effort. Being up there was one of the highlights of the holiday for me. From Kevin Laurence Walk 13 - The Tour of the Ste-Baume The compass point on the map is incorrectly positioned. In the first edition, North is actually pointing South (pg.89) and in the second edition North points West (pg.114). I hope this information proves useful when the time comes to publish the third edition. From Brian Chapman Suggested revisions for bits of Walk 25 as follows: Section 3 last sentence: The clearest indicator of the left turn is a yellow turn left sign(?) painted on a rock. Section 4 first sentence: there are blue and yellow splashes from this point. Section 5, penultimate sentence: It might be better to describe the "crest" as a "rise", as I was looking for something a little more substantial than what is actually there! Section 5, last sentence, suggest add: "This path is marked with a yellow cross on a rock to show that it is not part of the yellow way-marked route, but it is the one to take." Section 12, first sentence, suggest amend to "Ignore the first track right...... where there is a blue vertical cross on a slab of rock (3hrs 35mins). Section 12, second sentence, suggest add ".....bear left, passing a well-preserved borie n the right of the track." Section 13, 3rd sentence, suggest amend to "There is another well-preserved borie on the right.......". Section 14 - regrettably the orchards have now been grubbed out. From Margaret & Terry Smith In general for the walks that we did most of the old (blue) local waymarking has been replaced by new yellow flashes (except for walk 20 - Abbaye de Senanque, Gordes, where blue flashes are still being renewed, joined by atttractive new red butterfly stencils from about Paragraph 6 on the walk!). Walk 20-Abbaye de Senanque, Gordes Apart from the above note the only other change we found was at No.10 from "where the road bends left....", there is now a new fingerpost signboard to Gordes.1.7km. Walk 21 - Fontaine-de-Vaucluse and Wall of The Plague No.5 - There is no longer a green splash here but at the junction there is a new fingerboard signpost showing various destinations. Walk 22 - Fort de Buoux and Aiguebrun No.1 - There is no longer a rather hidden sign saying Fort de Buoux. No.7 - The "slab of concrete" is actually tarmac and the sign saying Sivergues has gone. No.11 - We failed to spot the river crossing here, but fortunately we had the Cartes IGN 3242 map and realised that we could get back to the Auberge on the left bank of the river. Walk 25 - North side of Luberon Mourre Negre No. 3 - There are new yellow flashes all the way to No.6. No.4 - We think that the fork at 40mins comes after Les Très Eves, not before, so we were surprised to find the T-junction (55mins) so soon. No.6 - There is now a yellow X on the path where you turn right (to be ignored). Walk 26 - Le Barroux to La Roque-Alric No.3 - No plum orchard, it must have been scrubbed out. You can no longer legitimately walk along the other side of the dam as this track is now marked private property too. The footpath has been diverted to the right up through the woods as soon as you reach the dam again, with a signpost and clear red and yellow markings. We followed your instructions, ignoring the private property sign and, although we heard a tractor, we did not get caught! The old path meets the new diverted footpath further along. No.4 - No apricot orchard now but new vines have been planted. No.5 - After "keep on the main wide track" do ignore the first right track into the vineyard as we took this in error and had to retrace our steps. The "proper" right turn at the T-junction is well marked with red/yellow signs. No.5 - "At T-junction do not take the path up the side of the hil to the right" - the red/yellow cross has now been joined by a blue cross. No.6 - "the short wooden posts with red/yellow markings" are perhaps best described as "pegs" with markings. In very many years of waking around the Mediterranean and elsewhere, we have never seen anything like them. They would be so easy to remove! No.11 - "Note - there are no signs now from here to the end of the walk" - there are now newly painted yellow flashes with some blue spots and some orange/brown ones to the beginning of the village. Walk 27 - Les Gorges de la Nesque No.2 - The sign towards Chapelle St-Michelle 1hr has now gone, so no time pressure there anymore! No.7 - "a sandy path through woodland to a T-junction" - there is now a fingerboard signpost here with directions back to Monieux (3.8k) and to the farm of Font de Jean. This will no doubt alleviate your readers' worries as it did ours! Walk 28 - Les Gorges de Curnier It might be useful in the "How to get there" instructions to add that the farm is now signed from the road with "chambres d'hôte" as it does not obviously look like a farm. No. 1 - The chain between the metal posts has gone. There are new yellow flashes on the walk. The "rare yellow splashes with B" have been replaced by frequest green arrows with B. Flash floods have obviously occurred here as the path is very much eroded. No.2 - "Follow the red/white splashes of the Grande Randonnée GR91B". There is now a fingerboard signpost with destinations just past the bergerie Jas des Landerots including one to the Jas de Pie Gros. No.7B - "Five minutes later do not go straight on" - the B yellow arrow has been replaced by a green one. No.9B - "ignoring the no entrance sign (sauf riverains) - there is now a fingerboard post with signs. Walk 37 - La Bigue du Siron No.1 - We would not call this a water trough but a wash house. The château ruins house a bell tower and not a "clock" tower. No.6 - At the Col de Darau there is a finger post which shows clearly that if you go down to the left (as you suggest) you will be heading for les Guivaudan Ruines. In fact you need to go straight on here (th way you came). At No.4 on the book map (where one has come from on the way out) there is no signpost, so it is worth taking note of this point on the way out. From Richard Lewis, Bandol, France We completed Walk No.17 and very much enjoyed it. The views are well worth while. The instructions are very clear. However, there are now new yellow splashes most of the way round. Note: Parking is on right hand side of road and not on the left. No.2: New yellow splashes are on Chemin de Passe Temps. No.3: At intersection ignore yellow splash to left. There is now a wooden fingerpost, follow direction "Col d'Aubignagne". Sign "Relais de Passe Temps" is still there. After 150m after intersection ignore path to right (new yellow splash), continue on road passing yellow cross. No.4: Pleasant bushy valley after first 100m once you have passed burnt out lorry and building rubble. No.5: Old yellow markers still there on slab of stone to right. No.6: Blue splash at path junction is visible, yellow cross has virtually disappeared. Once on this path new yellow splashes have been painted, sometimes over the old blue ones. From now on follow new yellow splashes almost to end of the walk at Les Bellons. Below la Grotte de Manon there are new blue markings up to the Grotte. From below Grotte follow fingerpost direction "Garlaban par le Vallon des Piches". "As the surrounding bushes become more pronounced" - the right hand turn is now clearly marked by a new yellow splash, with two yellow crosses visible on the path which goes straight on. No.7: Towards Plan d'Aigle follow new yellow splashes. Turn left at new yellow splash (post with orange square not seen). No.9: Missed this turn to the right as wasn't following instructions. At top (No.10) this path new yellow splashes so presumably it is marked in yellow at No.9. No.10: New marks on rock show both paths round Pic du Taoume to be yellow. No.12: Where two alternative paths meet there is now a wooden fingerpost. Follow "La Treille" direction and new yellow splashes. No.13: Keep following new yellow splashes. Didn't see any old yellow splashes to right. From Gilbert MacKay - June 2009 Walk No.5 - Le Baou de St-Jean Depart: Off the D2 on a side road at the Croix de Jubilé (small iron cross on the side of the road) 16km from Vence. How to get there (from Vence) 4th line - .......After passing the turning to the right going to the village of Coursegoules there are two bends - just after the second one take the side road going off to the left (signed Ecurie de Trepaut) leading to a smart signpost La Roubine after 100 metres. 6 Careful here - The path begins at a small cairn beyond which there are obscure red and yellow splashes on one of the path's stones (if you get to the signpost 170 5mins beyond you know you have gone too far!). |
